Q: Why create a social network map?

A: This simple exercise will allow you to identify the contacts which exist in your network and the potential flow of information you may receive. If you notice that you're lacking in one particular area of interest, you can take strides to make contacts who can provide you with the information necessary to achieve your goals.

In addition, you can monitor your network over time and determine if your network has grown. It is also helpful if you are working with a coach who is helping you with a particular activity (i.e., job search). Most people do not know how their contacts can help them. Conducting a social network audit will provide you with a structure process for uncovering the power of your network one contact at a time!

Q: What's can the SNAudit system do?

A: The SNAudit system will allow you to: * Manage all your contacts online and in one central location * Map your network and allows you to create customized maps * Create and manage goals that are attached to your contacts * Search your contacts by specialty and skill set * Export your contact list to a .cvs file which can be used in any spreadsheet program * Email contacts to request new contacts which are automatically inserted into your contact list * Conduct a social network audit which produces statistics of your network

The SNAudit has been created so that you can continue to store and manage your contacts as your network grows. With the social network audit function, you will be able to see over time how your network has grown.

Q: What are the steps to conducting a social network audit?

A: To conduct a social network audit, follow these simple steps: 1. Enter your contacts into the system by go to myContacts and follow the instructions. 2. After you entered all the contacts you have, go to myMaps to view your social network. 3. Once you viewed your network map, go to myGoals to create goal(s) and link them to the contacts (if applicable) you just entered in the system. 4. Go to myAudits, name the audit, click 'create audit' and then find the new audit in the list and select. 5. Your now ready to review your network stats. See What do the statistics represent in the audit for further detail on the numbers.

Note: For a more detailed description and a printable copy click on 7 Steps to Conducting a Social Network Audit.

Q: When I click on my default map for the first time, the system asks me to install an SVG viewer, what is an SVG viewer?

A: The SVG Viewer integrates with your Web browser as a plug-in. The Viewer allows you to interact with SVG images and is required to view your social network map. The viewer is automatically installed as a plug-in when you accept the download. For more information, visit http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html.

Q: Where can I get help if I'm a counselor and want to work with clients using the SNAudit system?

A: You can go to the Counselor Support Page directly or contact John-Paul Hatala directly for more information.

Q: How Do I change my password?

A: Go to the top left hand corner under the menu and select 'change password'. Enter existing password, then create a new one and press submit.

Q: How Do I create a social network map?

A:The first step is to add contacts (see: How do I add contacts?). This is done by clicking on my contacts. Enter as many contacts as you have. For future contacts or ones that you have forgotten to enter, you can always enter them at a later date. Once you have added your contacts (remember to fill out as much information as possible for each) you will be able to view your network map.

Now that you have entered some contacts, you now can go to myMaps to view your default social network. The default social network map consists of all the contacts you have entered into the SNAudit system.

You will notice that when you first start using the system, all of the contacts will be linked directly to you. This is referred to as one degree of separation. To create the one degree of separation, the contact source has to be your name. To create a second degree of contact, you would have to enter a new contact and indicate in the contact source a first degree contact, making it second degree contact. This can go on infinitely.

Q: How Do I create a customized social network map?

A: You also have the option of creating a customized map for specific groups of contacts. For example, if you would like to create a map of all your relatives, you can go to myMaps and select Create a new map. Fill in a name and description for your new map and select submit. Your customized map will be added to the myMaps list. Click on the new map. A large circle with your name in it will appear. Put your mouse curser over it and click. A pop-up window will appear with a list of all your contacts. Select the contacts you want to be included in the map and scroll to update and click. Your map will now change to depict the contacts selected. You can also add contacts that were referred to you by a contact in your map. Select a contact from the map, locate the contacts that are linked to this contact by viewing the contact source, select those individuals, click update and those contacts will be added to your map. Note: those contacts which are added to your map from a contact will represent the degree of separation.

Q: How do I add contacts?

A: first step is to add contacts. This is done by clicking on the myContacts. Enter as many contacts as you have. If you only want to enter minimal information to begin with, click Save. However, if you would like to enter more information, click on Enter More Details. For future contacts or ones that you have forgotten to enter, you can always go and more at a later date. In addition, you might consider emailing on of your contacts to add theirs to your network regarding a special request (i.e., if you're looking for a job you may ask them to add anyone they know that might help you). SEE: How do I make external requests for Contacts

Q: How do I delete Contacts?

A: In actuality you won't be deleting a contact. The reason for this is that once you make a contact they become part of your network permanently. What the system has been set up to do is temporarily make a contact obsolete. To do this, click on my contacts, locate the contact, select the edit feature beside the contact and change the status of the contact to obsolete. If you wish to have a contact retrieved after you have made it obsolete, contact support@socialnetworkaudit.com.

Q: How do I add/edit information to a contact?

A: Click on my contacts, locate the contact you want to add or edit information for. This will open the contacts fields, allowing you to change and add information.

Q: Can I add contacts while viewing a customized network map?

A: Yes. When viewing your customized map (you can't add to the default map), click on a contact. A window will popup. In the popup window, you will see a list of all your contacts. In the source field you will see the name of the contact you clicked, which will be beside any individual linked directly to that contact. Click the check mark box beside the contact and scroll down and click update. Your map will automatically be updated. Notice that the line for the new contact is not coming directing from you but the contact you originally clicked on. This indicates that the new contact you just added to your map is 2 degrees of separation from you.

Q: How do I add goals/objectives?

A: Click on myGoals and click on add goals. Simply type in the goal name and explain what it is in the description box. When you add contacts, you can now connect them to specific goals that you have set for yourself.

Q:Why are some contacts squares and others are circles on my network map?

A: In your network map you will see contacts within circles or squares. If you see a contact within a sqaure, it means that you have attached that contact to a goal or objective. Take a look at your network map to see which contacts are not squares and determine if there is anything they can do to help achieve your goals.

Q: How do I audit my network?

A: Simply click on the my audit and select 'Conduct a social network audit now'. The date of the audit will appear under my audit. Click on the date and statistics of your network will automatically be generated. Each time you click 'Conduct a social audit now', new statistics will be generated. Consider conducting an SNAudit once a week (as long as you enter new information into the system, otherwise no new statistics will be generated).
